Karen has undertaken various forms of outreach in relation to her research interests including presenting segments on TV, writing blogs, researching and curating exhibitions. She has worked with Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and Heart of Midlothian Football Club.

Project One: Skate the City

Role: Researcher, Consultant and Narrator

Dates: 2021-2022

Research: Skating in relation to Glasgow’s built environment and associated social history.

Project Two : Women, War & the West End

Role: Project Manager & Researcher

Dates: 2017-2019

Website: Women War & The West End

Funding Amount: £6,600 from The Heritage Lottery Fund

Research: Women related to Glasgow’s West End during World War 1 including women involved in sports, medicine, education, art & design and home life.

Partnership: The Scottish Graduate School of Arts & Humanities and Four Acres Charitable Trust.


Project Three : Journal Editor

Role: Scottish Society for Art History Journal Editor

Dates: 2019-Present

Overview: Working closely with authors, liaising with the Editorial Board, SSAH Committee and designer. Ensuring the that journal is presented in to a high standard.

Project Four : The History Girls

Role: Co-author & consultant for The History Girls Frae Scotland

Dates: 2015- Present

Research: Women and gender history in relation to Scotland.

Partnership: Rachael Purse

Overview: As The History Girls, we have been commissioned to research, write, present and produce events for various heritage/academic/community bodies including The People’s History Show (STV), Historic Environment Scotland, Paisley 2021, The Winnie Drinkwater Story (currently on Amazon Prime) and Glasgow Doors Open Day.


Project Five : The Maroon Mile

Role: Heritage Consultant and Maroon Mile Lead

Dates: 2023-2025

Funding Amount: £207,339, The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Partnership: Dr Lauren Beatty (Oral History Specialist)

Research: Social, sporting and local history in Gorgie and Dalry.

Overview: Grant writing and scoping for a National Lottery Heritage Fund application. This application was successful. Outcomes from the project included an oral history project, traditional skills festival, heritage trail, museum upgrade with interactive touchscreens and education outreach program. The project also produced a publication called Maroon Mile Memories. This project was a collaborative project based at Heart of Midlothian Football Club in Edinburgh.
