Margaret Chilton was born in Bristol in 1875. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art in London under Christopher Whall (1849-1924). After her studies she returned to Bristol and established her stained-glass studio. In 1918 she moved to Glasgow to take up a teaching post at a stained-glass studio, possibly Abbey Studio. During her time in Glasgow she enrolled at Glasgow School of Art, undertaking evening classes in Life Drawing. During her two years at GSA she met another stained glass artist – Marjorie Kemp. In 1922 Chilton and Kemp went on to establish their own stained-glass studio in Edinburgh.
