Artist and Designer, Mary Evelyn Beale studied at the GSA from 1917 to 1920, where she undertook day classes in Drawing & Painting and Modelling. Beale was a competent all-round designer and in 1908 she produced ‘An Edinburgh Alphabet’ with pianist Winifred Christie. Beale specialised in plaster statuettes and exhibited such pieces widely including at the RSA, GSLA and GIA. In 1927 she won the Lauder Prize for her ‘delightful statuettes in coloured plaster’. In 1927 Beale executed the War Memorial triptych frieze in Landsdowne Church, now Websters Theatre. She produced pieces which were exhibited at All Hallows Church as part of the Empire Exhibition in 1938. Beale died on the 12th February 1944 in an Edinburgh nursing home.
